Look for Rosebud from Citizen Kane (1941), in the junkyard sequence. As the camera pans at one point, you can clearly see the item. You have to have seen Citizen Kane to know what to look for.
The view of the "city lights" is a model which includes a suburb that looks suspiciously like a circuit diagram, complete with logic gates and an integrated circuit.
A newspaper headline is "Kingston Falls Mystery Still Unsolved". Kingston Falls was the town in Gremlins (1984), which Joe Dante also directed.
The school is named after animator Chuck Jones.
