According to an interview with director John Mctiernan, the "hole in the jungle" appearance of the Predator was played by Jean-claude Van Damme in a "blue screen" (actually red) suit. Van Damme quit after two days, unhappy with being cast as an uncredited special effect.
An attempt was made to get shots of the Predator swinging from tree to tree using a monkey in a red special-effects suit. However, the monkey kept removing the suit and the idea was abandoned.
There is a sanitized version which has most of the gory parts removed, e.g. the skinned bodies, the alien with Billy's body, Mac's brains being blown out, Dillon's arm being shot off, etc.
The theatrical release the film was banned in Germany, meaning that the uncut version may not be publicly shown or sold. Therefore the television version and the video version have some major cuts. Almost every violent scene was shortened, some scenes were completely removed (e.g. the scene where Dillon's arm is 'removed').
