Due to creative differences, director Walter Hill left the film during post-production and had his name removed from the project. Because the traditional pseudonym and fake director Alan Smithee has become increasingly recognizable by the public, the pseudonym Thomas Lee was used instead.
After Walter Hill left the film, the film was re-edited by an uncredited Francis Ford Coppola.
Knowing that Supernova would bomb, MGM retained the movie from public release for more than two years. Unable to find a buyer, the movie was reworked several times and finally released in January 2000.
